One of the most logical reasons for choosing PVC as a wire or cable insulation has been for its low-cost advantage. PVC is among the least expensive of materials and offers inherently good electrical and physical properties. It also offers a strong base to which its formulation can be changed to enhance certain properties. Because PVC is easy to process and suitable for high-speed extrusions, it has become the most popular insulation and default choice for wire and cable insulation. PVC is so pervasive that it is almost easier to list where PVC is not commonly used. The most common applications of PVC are on hook-up wire, communication cables, computer cables, and power and tray cables.
