SATA, NVMe and SMART

The first SSDs were created with SATA host interfaces, the same interface used for HDDs therefore SSD manufacturers had to define manufacturer specific attributes to monitor the health of SSDs. In addition to some of the standardized attributes carried over from the HDD industry, SSD manufacturers included attributes such as media wear out, host writes, flash writes, power on hours and read error rate to name just a few. Because NVMe was created specifically for SSDs from the ground up the developers of NVMe were able to standardize all SSD attributes similar to how the hard drive industry did many years ago. Today SMART is widely used on both SATA and NVMe SSDs and works well as a user tool to monitor the health and life of an SSD.
