SMART is an acronym that stands for self monitoring analysis and reporting technology. SMART began as a way for hard disk drive manufacturers to tell computers about the health of their HDDs. SMART defines a set of standardized and manufacturer specific attributes to monitor things like power on hours, drive temperature and media errors. The SSD industry has also adopted SMART and is supported by most major SSD suppliers to monitor the health of SSDs. However, for SSDs, some of the attributes that were used for hard drives do not apply to SSDs. This is not a problem since SMART provides manufacturer specific attributes that an SSD manufacturer can use to monitor any aspect of the SSD they wish.
