How to Overcome SSD Endurance Challenges?

Fortunately, over the past 10 years SSD Controllers have become increasingly sophisticated and have solved a lot of the issues that plagued early SSDs. SSD controllers now implement wear leveling techniques which is a process where data is spread out across the SSD so that data is not consistently being written to the same Flash cells all the time. Over-provisioning is another technique used where spare Flash is set aside from the user area for the controller to use as a working area to maintain peak performance and provide spare Flash for early bad block failures. SSD controllers also implement an internal house keeping process called Garbage Collection that prepares previously written Flash to be ready for new data writes coming into the SSD. Finally, when selecting an SSD for an application, it is recommended to have a general understanding of the workload data pattern so that the right SSD for the application can be selected. This will help to ensure the SSD will operate throughout the useful life span of the system its being installed into.
