What is the IoT 1 Slide 4

The typical reasons for developing an IoT solution would be business improvement with increased revenue or reduced costs. That is not always the case – there can be related reasons that force the development of an IoT solution. There are many drivers such as creating competitive differentiation, obtaining visibility and insights into potential issues, obtaining greater efficiency or complying with a government regulation. An example of a governmental regulation is when the government requires an electric utility to provide peak and off peak electricity rates to its customers. In that case, its not practical to ask a utility to send someone to read the meter at each house twice a day just to bill a customer a different rate for the day (which is typically higher) than the rates in the evening. A smart meter can be installed to deliver the information about energy usage and allow the utility company to comply with the regulation in an efficient manner. This is when an IoT solution is necessary but the reason for its deployment is not driven by revenue or cost reduction factors.
