This analysis by Beecham Research does a great job of describing IoT innovations in each major sector. It shows the impact of IoT across nine different service sectors, like Buildings, Energy, Consumer & Home, Healthcare, Industrial, Transportation, Retail, Security/Public Safety and IT and Networks. It then provides examples of applications that are necessary in each market, locations where IoT exists and finally a list of devices that are commonly used for each sector. For example, take a look at the Consumer & Home sector that, among others, has a set of applications designed around the Convenience and Entertainment area. Nest (now owned by Google) markets a Wi-Fi-connected thermostat that programs itself to adjust to users home habits. The thermostat system can help save energy, and it can be integrated with automated IoT lighting, security, and other tools to create the long-imagined connected home. This is an example of a device that utilizes IoT to improve consumer convenience in the home. In another example on the Transportation sector with an application on vehicles, a company called Novariant makes an autopilot system called GeoSteer for heavy agricultural machines like tractors and combines. Farmers can use GeoSteer to keep their machinery on course within inches of accuracy. This is crucial for agribusiness so no farm acreage is wasted during seeding or fertilizing. This application also helps the farm operator access remote portions of large fields. This research shows many examples of IoT innovation across multiple sectors and, with the variety of devices involved, the enormous scale and impact the IoT is going to have across the globe in the years to come.
