The Internet of Things (IoT) covers many separate concepts, but they share the following common features: distributed intelligence, multiple interconnected sensors/actuators and decentralized control. In practice, IoT means that certain spaces, environments or objects can be made “smart” by incorporating sensors that can communicate to make them behave intelligently. Not every power supply is suitable for an IoT application. They must be space-saving, reliable, highly efficient at both low load and full load, and above all they must be affordable as they will be as common as the sensors, processors and actuators they supply.

R-78S Series - Single Cell Battery Boost Switching Regulator

RECOM R-78S

Due to its wide input voltage range down to 0.65 V, high efficiency and low stand-by losses, the R-78S not only boosts the output voltage of a single cell, but also maintains a stable, regulated output until the battery is almost completely discharged. Based on the simple plug-and-play concept of the standard R-78 buck regulator, the R-78S boost regulator is able to provide a stable 1.8, 3.3 or 3.6 VDC output from any standard 1.5 V battery cell or lower voltage energy harvester output. Battery-powered applications such as microcontrollers, WLAN / Bluetooth / LoRa modules or IoT systems can now be supplied from a single high-capacity battery cell, which in contrast to conventional 3 V button cells, offers considerably more power for a longer operational life. With the R-78S a MEMS vibration generator output can be boosted up to a useful output voltage. The efficiency of the R-78S series can reach 93% at full load, maintained at over 90% even under light loading. An enable pin puts the converter into very low power standby mode.

R-78 Evalulation Boards

RECOM R-78 Evalulation Boards

The R-78S Evaluation Boards, Reference Design and Breakout boards allow engineers to test the functionality of the R-78S switching regulator, which can boost a AA battery or external supply voltage to 3.3V for low power IoT applications. They are equipped with jumper headers to measure input and output current and voltage, thus allowing typical battery lifetime calculations in both active and standby mode.

RECOM RAC Series

The RAC AC/DC converter series are low power supply modules ideally suited to IoT installations. They are compact, energy-efficient and have low standby power requirements, yet can deliver up to 175% peak load. For global compatibility, they work from all standard AC power supply voltages and are fully certified to worldwide standards, including the 55022 for EMC as well as the 60355-1 household standards (RACxx-GA). The RAC05-K is a low cost 5 W AC/DC converter in the tiny PCB size of 1"x1", offering an impressive power density of 7.7 W per in³. The RAC10-K low cost AC/DC converter series in a tiny 2"x1" package offers excellent efficiency over a wide load range, which makes them ideal for energy saving solutions in IoT.

RAC-SE Series - Low Profile AC/DC Converters (2-3 W)

RECOM RAC-SE Series

In large US office structures, the lighting supplies are often powered from a 277 VAC supply. The RAC-SE series have an extra wide input voltage range to cover 90-305 VAC supplies to enable intelligent lighting and smart office/ smart building applications. In addition, the RAC03-SER has a unique round shape only 11 mm thick to allow mounting inside a standard wall box behind a socket or switch plate. The SE series is UL/IEC/EN safety certified for industrial and household applications making them an excellent choice for global use.
