The Change the Planet with PSoC IoT Design Contest is being put on by Cypress, Hackaday, Digi-Key, & AWS, challenging the Hackaday community to design an IoT system that will change the planet using the Cypress PSoC 6 Microcontroller (MCU), Cypress Wi-Fi/Bluetooth Wireless Connectivity, and AWS IoT cloud services. PSoC 6 is Cypress’ super-charged IoT dual-core MCU featuring ultra-low-power and rich analog/digital peripherals. Pairing it with Cypress’ world class Wi-Fi/Bluetooth combo radios, and then connecting the hardware to AWS IoT provides an exciting launchpad for your next great IoT project idea that will change the planet. This resource center provides information about the PSoC 6 WiFi-BT Pioneer Kit (CY8CKIT-062-WIFI-BT) and PSoC 6 WiFi-BT Prototyping Kit (CY8CPROTO-062-4343W) used in the contest, as well as links to relevant hardware components.

PSoC 6 WiFi-BT Pioneer Kit

  • The ultra-low-power PSoC 62 MCU that integrates an Arm® Cortex®-M4 and Cortex-M0+ onto a single chip and provides up to 1 MB of Flash and 288 KB of SRAM
  • The Murata 1DX Module hosting the Cypress CYW4343W 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi + Dual-Mode Bluetooth combo chipset radio
  • TFT display shield board that provides users with a 2.4” TFT display, a light sensor, a 6-axis motion sensor, and a digital microphone
  • PSoC 5LP MCU for program/debug
  • Cypress' CapSense® capacitive touch sensing enabled buttons and sliders

Arduino Shields

As mentioned above, the PSoC 6 WiFi-BT Pioneer Kit is Arduino compatible. Digi-Key has a range of Arduino compatible of shields and expansion boards that plug into the normally supplied Arduino pin-headers. The different shields follow the same philosophy as the original toolkit: they are easy to mount and easy to use. Shields can provide additional functionality to an Arduino board, including motor control, GPS, Ethernet, LCD display, and bread boarding (prototyping).

As mentioned above, the PSoC 6 WiFi-BT Prototyping Kit is compatible with Pmod Peripheral Modules. Open, flexible and thoughtfully designed, Digilent's Pmods are an established add-on board standard offering an ideal way to bridge programmable logic and microcontroller boards to the physical world. With Digilent's line of over 80 modules and counting, users can easily augment the capabilities of system boards by adding sensors, actuators, communication, user input and much more, all while staying within the Pmod Ecosystem. From rapid prototyping to learning the basics, it is Digilent's goal to get users up and running with useful data in just a matter of minutes.
