TFE/TFA/TFPM/TFSM26 Series Tuning Fork Crystals

CTS's new tuning fork crystal products: the low ESR TFE series, the TFA series for automotive and industrial applications, and the TFPM and TFSM26 legacy designs

Along with the new series releases, CTS is also adding two legacy packages to their overall tuning fork portfolio.

Many of today’s electronic devices require some form of timekeeping that includes the current time, calendar events, or processing scheduled tasks. Real time clock (RTC) references provide a cost-effective solution to support such critical functions as keeping track of time and organizing multiple tasks, such as taking measurements, monitoring communications, and wake-up on demand surveillance.


Portable or handheld electronics require low power FPGAs and microcontrollers (MCUs) to preserve battery life for long hours of operation. Operating at voltage levels below 1.5 V require crystals with low ESR to ensure crystal start-up and minimize current consumption during wake-up on demand operations. The new low ESR series offer resistances as low as 50 k ohms maximum and are available two ceramic package size options: 3.2 mm x 1.5 mm (TFE32) and 2.0 mm x 1.2 mm (TFE20).


Developed to function in extreme environmental conditions for automotive and industrial applications, the new TFA product series offers operating temperature options of -40°C to +125°C. This series is compliant to automotive standard AEC-Q200 and is available in a ceramic package of 3.2 mm x 1.5 mm.


Continued demand for older standard package formats and CTS’ ability to provide quality devices at competitive pricing drives the release of these two models. TFPM comes in an 8.0 mm x 3.8 mm plastic molded package, standard tolerance at ±20 ppm, and parabolic temperature coefficient -0.034 ppm/°C2 over -40°C to +85°C. TFSM26 is housed in a 6.2 mm x 2.1 mm cylindrical through-hole package with the leads formed to create a surface mount footprint.

These new model series were added to an extensive line of tuning fork crystal products, supporting a wide range of package sizes, from the large plastic legacy type to smaller ceramic configurations used in portable applications.

All CTS tuning fork crystal designs operate at 32.768 kHz and include features such as turnover temperature range of +25°C ±5°C, standard load capacitance of 12.5 pF with other load options available, the lowest series resistance values available (platform dependent), insulation resistance of 500 M ohms at +100 VDC, and a storage temperature range of -55°C to +125°C. All TF series products are RoHS compliant and shipped in standard tape and reel packaging, except TFNC series.
