ZF's innovative wireless and battery-less energy harvesting technology provides effective solutions in a variety of environments and applications. Energy harvesting applications can be found in almost every market sector, including industrial and building automation, smart home, and medical. These products provide a cost effective alternative to wired or battery-powered solutions, eliminating the need for wires, cables and batteries. Compatible with multiple protocols, the products are suitable for global use being offered in 868 MHz, 915 MHz, and 2.4 GHz. As there is no need to change or dispose of batteries, the solution is both environmentally friendly and maintenance-free.

Energy harvesting can be described as an 'operation without any auxiliary energy'. Instead of generating auxiliary energy through an integrated energy source or adding it via an external energy supply, the switch uses its own actuation mechanics to create its own energy. The actuation process moves a magnet around a coil, thus creating and storing energy.

That energy is then transmitted using a switching signal to a wireless receiver via RF electronics. The advantages of the system are that the switch can be placed anywhere without the need for any wires. Over its whole life cycle it will fulfill its function completely maintenance-free and without any need to replace a battery. The RF switch is fed with different input parameters and is capable of reacting to its environment.
