It was just revealed that 9/11 is the most memorable TV moment of the past 50 years, so what type of event do you think is/will be a contender for most memorable social networking or online moment? Are we there yet or what type of tools do you think we need to create in order to capture those moments?
I'd be interested to hear your thoughts!
Interesting question! 9/11 was such a powerful TV moment because we as a country watched those events live as they happened.
A possible problem with having a common 'most memorable social networking moment' may be that nowadays news, and events are covered on every imaginable media all at once. There may not be any 'moments' that happen exclusively on say Facebook that we won't see or hear about on TV, in print, or other sources.
I'm sure as individuals we will have memorable moments in social media when we hear big news or have a significant event happen in our lives. Anyone been proposed to via FaceBook yet? ![]()
Hi MetMan,
I think you are absolutely right, it is going to become more of invidual memories as ooposed to collective memories at one moment. Anyone who was old enough to rememberthe Space Shuttle tragedy for instance, remembers where they were that day. I wonder if events will resonate with people as much if they only hear about it through social media (which you explained is unlikely). Aftre all a picture is worth a thousand words, or in this case, 140 characters!
Social media may be where people hear big news first. If we had another terror attack for instance (hopefully we won't) i'm sure the news would spread like wildfire via Facebook, Twitter, texting, etc which would be a memorable moment I'm sure. But I think most people would then instantly turn on the TV or go to news websites looking for more details, pictures, videos of what was happening.
Do you think that there are any tools/technology that could be developed that would help capture those moments, or are we there now?
I think we have more tools than ever for capturing moments. Just the fact that so many people have mobile devices that capture pictures & video means that everyone can be an on the spot reporter as events happen. And I'm sure soon we'll have live Google spy, err I mean navigation, sattelites that can display & capture every detail of our world real time. ![]()
