Location of Surge Arrester in Large Buildings

Just a general question, why are there surge arresters installed between elevator rails? Is there any way that, if a bulding were to be struck by lightning, specially really tall one's, it would affect the elevators? That would be pretty scary, but wouldnt the grounding system of the building be enough to redirect any effects from lightning, since elevators are inside the building? I hope I'm making sense.

Thanks in advance..
