Hello everyone, this is a multi-part questions of sorts:
When building your own printer, what are some of the most important components that must to be high quality, and are there are short cuts for cost savings on everything else....i.e.; converting an old PC PSU into a dedicated DC power supply?
Is it possible to create a 3D printer as advanced as the cubify by purchasing parts from digi-key and other vendors?
Do any of you have any experience attempting to build you own 3D printer?
I found a list of open source DIY printer kits one can put together with some knowledge of electronics.
I think that’s quite hard. Self-assembly 3D printer is quite hard to make, especially if some of the parts are from different suppliers. It will save you a lot of trouble and money if you buy a branded printer like Makerbot, Printbot or Leapfrog. Now, all you have to worry about is looking for good quality filament supplier like 3d2print.net.
There are DIY kits which you can easily set up. Plus, this DIY printer kits are usually cheaper than readily available 3D printer machines. Mine is Eventorbot which support the 3D printing materials that I order at 3D2print.net.
