New Bluetooth RF Modules. Bluetooth, which is based on IEEE 802.15.1, was developed for the purpose of sending larger amounts of data quickly from computers to PDAs to cell phones or other portable handheld devices. Key features include high data rate, frequency hopping, very small form factor and modest power consumption. Panasonic offers a new Bluetooth RF module product line that makes connectivity between mobile devices such as cellular phones and small button cell battery powered devices like fitness sensors, watches, healthcare, entertainment and mobile accessories easily implemented, creating a seamless data chain from sensors to the Web.

Bluetooth Classic, formerly known as Bluetooth and Bluetooth EDR, is a networking standard designed to meet IEEE 802.15.1 and administered by the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (BT SIG). Conceived as a 2.4GHz wireless standard to replace wired headsets in 1999, Bluetooth has grown in both scope and capability. By far it is the most prolific wireless standard today adding over 1,000,000 nodes to the network every day, in cell phones, PC's, consumer and medical electronics applications and many more. Bluetooth Classic is best suited to high data rate – up to 3Mbits/sec – applications where the network size is under eight nodes. Larger networks can be formed with Scatternets. Connections are robust, even in noisy environments, by using 80 channels, each 1MHz wide, adaptive frequency hopping, and multiple modulation schemes. Range can be adjusted using hardware and software from under a meter to over two hundred meters. Panasonic offers four Series of Bluetooth devices with over 20 parts numbers, to address nearly every application.

Introducing Panasonic’s next generation, smartphone compatible, place and play Bluetooth module, the PAN1322 Series. This module features an embedded microcontroller, Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR stack, serial port profile (SPP), AT command set API and antenna. This cost engineered solution is based on a single chip solution that integrates an ARM7TDMI processor with a Bluetooth controller. The BT 2.1 + EDR stack provides secure, reliable, high speed data connections using Secure Simple Paring (SSP) eliminating manual password creation. Embedded serial port profile (SPP) frees application resources while the AT command set API creates a simple firmware interface using modem commands. An onboard antenna does away with 2.4GHz RF circuit complexity.

Created with the design engineer in mind, product design cycles are greatly reduced using Panasonic’s reference design and design review services. PCB layouts are simplified using available Gerber files and minimized with Panasonic’s tiny footprint technology. The module is and is just 15.6mm x 8.7mm x 2.8mm and fully shielded to improve immunity. GPIO is exposed using AT commands. All Panasonic Bluetooth RF modules carry FCC, IC, CE Bluetooth certifications.

The PAN1322 Series recognizes Apple’s authentication coprocessor and supports Bluetooth Serial Port Profile (SPP) data communication1 with Apple’s iPhone and iPad®*. Connectivity also includes Android, smart phones and all Bluetooth enabled devices2.

Panasonic remains committed to customers as a module manufacturer by extending product life using legacy footprints and firmware interfaces to make the PAN1322 Series fully compatible with the module it replaces, the PAN1321 Series.

Hardware and firmware prototyping and testing are accelerated using the EVAL_PAN1322 development kit and SPP Toolbox development environment.

Dual-Mode Wireless Bluetooth Connectivity and Bluetooth Low Energy - Introducing Panasonic’s latest breakthrough in wireless networking, the NEW PAN1326/1316 Series RF Modules featuring both Bluetooth Low Energy and Bluetooth connectivity. This powerful new technology combination creates a low cost, ultra-low power wireless networking solution for short range applications.

The Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) standard is designed to reduce power consumption by establishing very fast connections (few ms) and transferring small amounts of data. Using these techniques, energy consumption is reduced to a tenth of Classic Bluetooth.

Bluetooth Low Energy devices can be put into a sleep mode and activated for event activities such as sending files to a gateway, PC or mobile phone. Furthermore, the maximum power consumption is less than 15 mA and the average power consumption is about 1 uA. Thus, a small coin cell – such as a CR2032 – is capable of powering a device for up to 10 years of operation.

The NEW PAN1326/1316 Host Controlled Interface (HCI) Series also brings Texas Instrument’s CC2564, to an easy-to-use module format. The NEW PAN1323 Series is based upon Texas Instrument’s CC256x integrated circuits and uses a host controlled interface (HCI), a cost effective and flexible means to implement a Bluetooth network. The PAN1323 Series is pad compatible with Panasonic’s PAN1325A, PAN1326 and PAN1327 Series. The PAN1323 Series provides easily integrated Bluetooth Version 4.0 and ANT connectivity into new and current designs by removing RF design and certification barriers from the development of the application. Bluetooth Low Energy is designed to reduce power consumption. It can be put into a sleep mode and is only activated for event activities such as sending files to a gateway, PC or mobile phone. Furthermore, the maximum power consumption is set to less than 15 mA and the average power consumption is about 1 uA. The foundations of low energy consumption are short messages and establishing very fast connections (few ms). Using these techniques, energy consumption is reduced to a tenth of a Classic Bluetooth unit. Thus, a small coin cell – such as a CR2032 – is capable of powering a device for up to 10 years of operation.

Panasonic has two Bluetooth Low Energy module Series. The single mode, PAN1720 is a Bluetooth Smart device and the dual mode, PAN1316/PAN1326 family is Bluetooth Smart Ready. All Panasonic Bluetooth Low Energy modules are compatible with Apple® 4S iPhone® devices.

PAN1740 is the next generation Bluetooth Low Energy Module from Panasonic with reduced form factor, significantly lower power consumption and embedded Software Stack. The Singlemode Bluetooth Smart System-on-Chip module is optimized for low power, small size and low system cost products. It reduces external component count, development effort and time to market.

The Module is manufactured in a very small 9.0* 9.5* 1.8 mm3 SMD package with shielded case and chip antenna. The power consumption of only 4.9mA in Tx and Rx mode makes the use of coin cell batteries possible or reduces the needed battery capacity and cost of existing solution by at least 50%. It is qualified according to Bluetooth 4.0 standard. FCC, IC and CE approvals are under preparation.

The PAN1740 comes with a complete software development platform, which includes a qualified Bluetooth Smart single-mode stack on chip. Multiple Bluetooth Smart profiles for consumer wellness, sport, fitness, security and proximity applications are supplied as standard, while additional customer profiles can be developed and added as needed.
