Linear Technology's LTC436x overvoltage protection family brings a number of advantages to low voltage, portable applications. All devices feature 2% accurate 5.8V overvoltage protection with fast shutdown of 1μs to protect low voltage electronics from damage. High input overvoltage protection of 80V with the LTC4360 and LTC4361 and 28V with the LTC4362 provides protection from high voltage transients without requiring transient voltage suppressors or input capacitors in most applications. All devices feature a shutdown mode that gently puts the device into a low power mode, regardless of the input voltage, providing a low power dissipation mode for power-critical portable applications. Overview

LTC4360
The LTC4360 overvoltage protection controller is recommended for applications that do not require overcurrent protection. While offering many of the same features as the LTC4361, the two LTC4360 versions are differentiated by pin functions. The LTC4360-1 features soft shutdown control (ON# pin) with low shutdown current of 1.5μA, while the LTC4360-2 can drive an optional external P-channel MOSFET for negative voltage protection.

LTC4361
The LTC4361 is a 2.5V to 5.5V overvoltage and overcurrent protection controller designed to safeguard low voltage, portable electronics from damaging input voltage transients and current surges. The LTC4361 utilizes a 2% accurate 5.8V overvoltage threshold to detect an overvoltage event and respond quickly to isolate the downstream components from the input. Overvoltage protection of up to 80V can be achieved with this simple IC/MOSFET solution without the need for additional external components at the input. In addition, the LTC4361 monitors voltage drop across a current sense resistor at the input of the circuit to protect against overcurrent faults.

LTC4362
The LTC4362 is a 1.2A overvoltage/overcurrent protector that includes an internal 40mΩ N-channel MOSFET and 31mΩ current sense resistor in series with the input power supply. The internal avalanche rated MOSFET can absorb a single pulse avalanche energy of 10mJ, eliminating the need for an input capacitor or TVS in most applications. High overvoltage threshold accuracy of 2% and fast shutdown within 1μs protects low voltage electronics from damage. In addition, the LTC4362 monitors the voltage drop across an internal current sense resistor to provide a 20% accurate, 1.5A overcurrent threshold. The input can also withstand up to ±25kV of ESD (HBM) with a 1μF capacitor on the output.
