Best Dimming Performance

Cirrus Logic is setting the standard for dimmer compatibility based on a three-year investment to develop a proprietary digital adaptive dimmer-compatibility algorithm, as well as new LED driver topologies and system architectures. This combination makes up the foundation of the patented technology found in all Cirrus Logic LED driver IC families. This core digital intelligence enables these controllers to identify the type of dimmer in use and adapt the algorithm to provide smooth dimming. For consumers, the dimming experience replicates what they have come to expect from decades of using incandescent light bulbs. This smart adaptive digital signal processing technology is not possible with today’s analog controllers.

Near 100 Percent Tested Dimmer Compatibility

Using more than 300 dimmers acquired from all over the world, Cirrus Logic developed a dimmer compatibility test to measure the performance of the CS161X, CS161XA, CS1615/16, CS1615A/16A, CS1630/31, and CS1680 product families versus the current offering of competing LED driver solutions. The following is an overview of the test methodology. All tests were conducted in single and multi-lamp configurations.

  • Flicker Free
    • Flickering at any point along the dimming range results in a failure
  • Monotonic Dimming
    • Smooth dimming curve, any drop-out or sudden shift in light output along the dimming range results in a failure
  • Dim Range - Minimum and Maximum Light Output
    • Power stage output current is first measured with no dimmer, then a dimmer is connected and output current is compared to the initial no dimmer measurement
    • At minimum dim setting, output current >3% results in a failure
    • At maximum dim setting, output current <98% results in a failure

Cirrus Logic's patent-pending approach to dimmer compatibility allows for full functionality on all types of dimmers, including leading edge, trailing edge, and "smart" dimmers.
