Best Dimming Performance

Cirrus Logic is setting the standard for dimmer compatibility as a result of a three-year investment in a proprietry adaptive dimmer-compatibility algorithm, LED driver topologies, and system architecture which combine to make up the foundation of the patented technology found in the CS1615/16, CS1610/11/12/13 and CS1630/31 families. This core digital intelligence enables these controllers to identify the type of dimmer in use and adapt the algorithm to provide smooth dimming. For consumers, the dimming experience replicates what they have come to expect from decades of using incandescent light bulbs. This smart adaptive digital signal processing technology is not possible with today's analog controllers.

Near 100 Percent Tested Dimmer Compatibility

Cirrus Logic developed a compatibility test to measure the performance of existing LED driver solutions against the CS1610, CS1615/16, and CS1630 product families using more than 300 dimmers acquired from all over the world. The following is an overview of the test methodology. All tests were conducted in single and multi-lamp configurations.

  • Flicker Free
    • Flickering at any point along the dimming range results in a failure
  • Monotonic Dimming
    • Smooth dimming curve, any drop-out or sudden shift in light output along the dimming range results in a failure
  • Dim Range - Minimum and Maximum Light Output
    • Power stage output current is first measured with no dimmer, then a dimmer is connected and output current is compared to the initial no dimmer measurement
    • At minimum dim setting, output current >3% results in a failure
    • At maximum dim setting, output current <98% results in a failure

Cirrus Logic's patent-pending approach to dimmer compatibility allows for full functionality on all types of dimmers, including leading edge, trailing edge, and "smart" dimmers. In North America, smart dimmers represent some of the most popular models sold today and present unique compatibility problems for competing LED drivers.

Cirrus Logic reference designs demonstrate the performance of the CS1615/16, CS1610/11/12/13 and CS1630/31 LED Drivers ICs with their best-in-class dimmer compatibility for leading-edge, trailing-edge, and digital dimmers. These form factors are targeted to fit into many LED bulb applications (GU10, A19, PAR, BR).
