Apex Microtechnology and Digi-Key offer an alternative to internal, on-chip voltage references


A precision voltage reference, like those in the new Apex product family, offer performance features intended to diminish the impact of adverse operating conditions. Apex precision voltage references exhibit much lower voltage supply drift, lower temperature coefficients, and reduced thermal hysteresis. The result is a more attractive solution when compared with their internal, on-chip counterparts.

The basic design premise for using a voltage reference is to produce a precise value of output voltage. A typical application is a data conversion system where system accuracy is very much dependent on the accuracy of the supply voltage established by either an internal or external DC voltage reference. The voltage reference sets the full-scale input of the data conversion system.

Any lapse in the voltage reference's ability to maintain the accuracy of the supply output over operating temperature, and the linearity, as well as the dynamic range of the system, will be adversely affected. The performance of practically all voltage references, whether internal or external, will vary simply over time by nature or as a result of environmental factors such as humidity, pressure and temperature.

VRE100 Series — 10 V, Hermetic 14-pin Ceramic DIP


VRE100 Series Precision Voltage References provide ultra stable +10 V (VRE100), -10 V (VRE101) and ±10 V (VRE102) outputs with ±0.5 mV initial accuracy and a temperature coefficient as low as 0.5 ppm/°C over the full military temperature range. This improvement in accuracy is made possible by a unique, proprietary multipoint laser compensation technique.

VRE104 Series — 4.5 V, Hermetic 14-pin Ceramic DIP


VRE104 Series Precision Voltage References provide ultra stable +4.5 V outputs with up to ±0.4 mV initial accuracy and temperature coefficient as low as 0.6 ppm/°C over the full military temperature range. These references are specifically designed to be used with the Crystal Semiconductor line of successive-approximation type Analog to Digital Converters (ADCs). This line of ADCs sets new standards for temperature drift, which can only be as good as the external reference used. The VRE104 combined with a Crystal ADC will provide the lowest drift data conversion obtainable.
